Easy Pumpkins from Oranges

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Easy Pumpkins from OrangesThe weather here has really taken on the feeling of fall so I am sharing a super-easy and fun idea that even the kids can help you make...creating pumpkins from oranges! They are a whimsical addition to your fall décor that can be used as bowl fillers, place cards and even a great little treat!

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Easy Pumpkins from Oranges suppliesHere's what you will need:
  • Oranges
  • Green felt
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Pattern for leaves found HERE
  • Jute twine
  • Sharp knife
  • Scissors

And here's what you will do:
  1. Print the pattern and cut a leaf for each orange.
  2. Fold the leaf in half and cut a tiny slit near the bottom of each leaf.
  3. Cut a piece of jute twine about 12 inches long.
  4. Insert the twine through the slit.
  5. Using the knife, make a small hole in one end of the orange.
  6. Insert the cinnamon stick until only a small portion protrudes. This is the stem.
  7. Tie the twine around the cinnamon stick and adjust the leaf.
Of course, you will want to do the steps using the scissors and the knife if children are helping you.

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Easy Pumpkins from OrangesTaaa daaa! Here it is! Isn't it cute? Imagine making the leaf from green scrapbooking paper and adding names...instant place cards!

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Easy Pumpkins from OrangesI will be displaying mine and will see how long they last. I'm hoping the cinnamon stick preserves them much like cloves do when you make a pomander. I'll keep you posted! In any case, they will be a fun decoration for a little while! ;-)

CONFESSIONS OF A PLATE ADDICT Easy Pumpkins from OrangesAlthough when the little grands see them, they may become instant treats! I have to admit that I have already...errrr...sacrificed one to the cause myself! I squeezed the orange and drank the juice though the cinnamon stick! It took a little practice but the cinnamon added a nice flavor twist! Just be sure that you are not allergic to cinnamon first since it's a relatively common spice allergy.

And just in case you are like me and making your own pumpkins while waiting for the real thing to arrive, here are 15 WAYS TO DECORATE WITH PUMPKINS. I've included all kinds of DIY pumpkins made from everything from burlap and old shirts to much more elegant ticking and toile!

Now...if those real pumpkins would only arrive and I can quit stalking the stores!

Remember to pin it!

See you next time! À la prochaine!
